The holiday season is supposed to be joyful, but for many leaders, December feels like a sprint to the finish line. Deadlines loom, teams are tired, and personal commitments pile up. So how do you keep calm, support your team, and finish the year strong?

Here are seven practical strategies to help you survive, and thrive, during the festive rush:

1. Prioritise Ruthlessly

Not everything needs to be done before Christmas. Identify the top three must-do tasks and focus your energy there. Defer non-critical projects to January and communicate this clearly to stakeholders. Clarity reduces stress for everyone.

2. Protect Your Team’s Energy

Your team is likely feeling the pressure too. Encourage realistic workloads and avoid last-minute surprises. Offer flexibility where possible.  Remote work or adjusted hours can make a big difference, and don’t underestimate the power of recognition: a simple thank-you note or shout-out can boost morale.

3. Communicate Early & Often

Uncertainty breeds stress. Share clear timelines for holiday closures, deadlines, and expectations well in advance. When people know what’s coming, they can plan more easily and avoid a last minute rush.

4. Model Calm & Boundaries

Your team takes cues from you. If you’re frantic, they will be too. Stay composed and set boundaries for after-hours emails. Tools like “delay delivery” on emails can help prevent late-night messages from creating unnecessary pressure.

5. Plan for Absences

Confirm who’s away and ensure coverage for critical tasks. A holiday handover checklist can prevent last-minute scrambles and keep things running smoothly.

6. Celebrate Progress

Before everyone disappears for the holidays, take time to acknowledge wins from the year. A short virtual toast or a team lunch can create closure and boost morale heading into the break.

7. Look After Yourself

Remember, leadership isn’t about doing it all. Schedule downtime for yourself.  Even 15 minutes of quiet can reset your brain. Delegate where possible and remember: you don’t need to carry everything alone.

Pro Tip: Start January strong by setting clear priorities now. A little planning today saves a lot of stress tomorrow.
